The Margrethe Maersk container ship, one of the largest container ships in the world, has a tonnage of 214,121 DWT, carrying capacity of more than 18,300 TEUs, nearly 400 meters long and 59 meters wide.
With this size, it is estimated that, the Margrethe Maersk is longer than the height of the Eiffel Tower, 5.5 times as long as the Airbus A380. If stacking 18,000 20-foot containers when the vessel is full in one row, the length can be over 100km.

With this event, CMIT has become one of about 20 major ports in the world capable of receiving ships of this size, contributing to confirm the position of the Cai Mep - Thi Vai port system on the world maritime map.
In order for this container ship to dock, CMIT port company cooperates with the Portcoast consultant to survey and evaluate the port infrastructure, develop a marine safety assurance plan to submit to competent authorities for consideration and approval, ensuring the absolute safety of ships entering the port.

According to CMIT, the event that the ship docked is an important milestone not only for CMIT port in Cai Mep deep-water port area but also for Vietnam's maritime industry.
The fact that CMIT port is capable and licensed to receive ships with a tonnage of more than 214,000 tons to dock at the port is of special significance in the context of the free trade agreements that Vietnam has signed such as the Self-Trade Agreement. by the European Union (EU) - Vietnam (EVFTA), the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) ...
At that time, Vietnam's import and export goods will be loaded on large mother ships that go directly to major markets such as Europe and the US without transshipment through transit ports such as Singapore, Malaysia ... to save logistics costs, increase competitiveness, reduce shipping times, from which goods can soon access the market.
Therefore, this is a major development step of the maritime industry to prepare resources for the potential growth of Vietnam's foreign trade.
